Traces of Matrix Products

Given two noncommuting matrices, A and B, it is well known that AB and BA have the same trace. This extends to cyclic permutations of products of A’s and B’s. It is shown here that for 2 × 2 matrices A and B, whose elements are independent random variables with standard normal distributions, the probability that Tr(ABAB) > Tr(AB) is exactly 1 √ 2 .

Lommel Matrix Functions

The main objective of this work is to develop a pair of Lommel matrix functions suggested by the hypergeometric matrix functions and some of their properties are studied. Some properties of the hypergeometric and Bessel matrix functions are obtained.

Margin Maximizing Loss Functions

Margin maximizing properties play an important role in the analysis of classi£cation models, such as boosting and support vector machines. Margin maximization is theoretically interesting because it facilitates generalization error analysis, and practically interesting because it presents a clear geometric interpretation of the models being built. We formulate and prove a suf£cient condition fo...

Volumes, Traces and Zeta Functions

Let Q(x) be a quadratic form over Rn. The Epstein zeta function associated to Q(x) is a well known function in number theory. We generalize the construction of the Epstein zeta function to a class of function φ(x) defined in Rn that we call A−homogeneous, where A is a real aquare matrix of order n having each eigenvalue in the left hal space Reλ > 0. Such a class includes all the homogeneous po...

Maximizing Stochastic Monotone Submodular Functions

We study the problem of maximizing a stochastic monotone submodular function with respect to a matroid constraint. Our model can capture the effect of uncertainty in different problems, such as cascade effects in social networks, capital budgeting, sensor placement, etc. We study the adaptivity gap the ratio between the values of optimal adaptive and non-adaptive policies and show that it is eq...
